Peggy Mote and I have for
many years preferred the needle turn method for appliqué sewing
projects. There is something so satisfying about relaxing back in a
comfortable chair, sewing and visiting. We can carry a little plastic
bag with our fabric and a very small kit for supplies. We can be very
productive with our projects, because we can combine our sewing with our
other activities. Basic Appliqué Supplies are very small scissors, thimble, thread to match appliqué fabric, very small needles and pins, light table, iron and pad for pressing, and freezer paper. Our patterns provide a list of supplies needed. Start with an off-white background and cut 2 to 3 inches wider and longer than the pattern requires. For the pattern layout, place the background fabric over the pattern on the light table, and with a water soluble pen draw the outline of the whole pattern onto the background. Omit detail, which the appliqué pieces will cover. Place a sheet of freezer paper over the pattern and trace the outline of the individual pieces. (Be sure to print the number of each piece on the freezer paper.) Cut out each piece from the freezer paper. Press freezer paper pieces onto fabric and cut out leaving 1/4 inch turn under allowance. Sew each piece starting with number one of the pieces and continue in number sequence. (We take the freezer paper off of the piece of fabric and then pin it in place before sewing..) Needle turn the easy way by sewing with about 18 inches of thread with a small knot. Use the side of the needle to help turn under the seam allowance while sewing around the piece. Take extra small stitches at points and where you must cut away the seam allowance for a sharp turn. The blind stitch is the needle turn stitch where the thread travels on the back of the background fabric and pops up to take nips at the edge of the appliqué piece on top and back down into the background. Keep your stitches snug so that the piece will not be loose. Email Joyce for Additional Help and Suggestions for Beautiful Appliqué For
